PROTECTING THE RIGHT
TO MEDICAL CARE FOR
EVERY PERSON INCARCERATED

THE PROBLEM

1.9 million people are locked up in the US.

They suffer disproportionately from health conditions, their medical needs often go unmet, and the carceral healthcare system often fails to provide timely and effective care.

Attorneys and advocates around the country are in urgent need of expert medical witness testimony to protect the constitutional right to medical care promised to people detained and incarcerated.

OUR SOLUTION

Remove the cost barrier to expert witness services.

MJA mobilizes clinicians nationwide to volunteer expert witness services to support attorneys and agencies getting medical care to people who need it most. They do this by consulting and testifying in individual medical release cases and conditions of confinement class action cases. Voulnteers also engage in education and advocacy work.

Through MJA’s community of medical volunteers, attorneys and advocates no longer face a cost barrier to expert testimony for the country’s most vulnerable people.
